Description
Deutsch: Bad Mergentheim (Main-Tauber-Kreis): Hospital zum Heiligen Geist (Kirchstraße 4). Das Foto zeigt das über dem Tor zur Kirchstraße bzw. zum Gänsemarkt angebrachte prunkvolle barocke Relief mit einer Variante des Wappens des Deutschen Ordens (s.u.) und einer krönenden Darstellung der Schutzpatronin des Ordens, der heiligen Elisabeth von Thüringen, beim Speisen der Armen, eine Anspielung auf den Zweck des Hospitals. Die Inschrift nennt als Erbauungsdatum 1698 und den damaligen Hochmeister des Deutschen Ordens: „Beÿ Regierung des Hochwürdigst(en) Duchleuchtigst(en) Fürsten und Herrn Herrn Franß Ludwigß …“ – damit müsste Franz Ludwig von Pfalz-Neuburg gemeint sein, 1694–1732 Hochmeister des Deutschen Ordens und Inhaber des dargestellten Wappens.
English: Bad Mergentheim, Germany: former Hospital of the Holy Ghost (Kirchstrasse 4), magnificent baroque relief over the portal to the Kirchstrasse or Gänsemarkt resp. The sculpture shows (among other things) a variant of the coats of arms of the Teutonic Order (see below) and at the top the patron saint of the order, Elizabeth of Hungary. The inscription mentions as date 1698 and the incumbent Grand Master of the Teutonic Order, “Franß Lugwigß”, very probably meaning Francis Louis of Palatinate-Neuburg, 1694–1732 the Grand Master of the Teutonic Order and owner of the coats of arms.
