Description
English: De Heksenwaag (Witches' scales) at Oudewater, Netherlands. In medieval times, women suspected of witchcraft were weighed on the scale. Should they weigh more than a specified amount, they were deemed unable to fly and therefore not witches. At that time, a certificate from Oudewater saved many women who were at danger of stoning or being burnt at the stake after a rigged trial. Today such certificates are a tourists attraction.
Nederlands: De Heksenwaag in Oudewater, Nederland. In de middeleeuwen werden vrouwen verdacht van hekserij op de schaal gewogen. Mochten ze meer wegen dan een bepaald aantal, dan werden ze geacht niet te kunnen vliegen en dus ook geen heksen. In die tijd redde een certificaat uit Oudewater veel vrouwen die na een rigoureus proces het gevaar liepen te stenigen of op de brandstapel te worden verbrand. Tegenwoordig zijn dergelijke certificaten een toeristische attractie.
